Heroes can be made of gold or even be invisible, once again, only limited by your imagination. Villains can possess the power of Superman by simply adding “Super” in front of their name. The notebook also allows you to add an adjective to a character to enhance their abilities. Not only does it list characters but it also details weapons and accessories that they own, all of which are at your disposal via the notebook. I’d likely wager a dollar or two that even the most seasoned of comic book readers would be tempted to do the very same. Personally, I spent nearly two hours poring through the nearly endless lists of both heroes and villains on the BatComputer, after the Dark Knight himself invited me to his secret hideout. There are hundreds of characters available to conjure up. Those of you who know a little about the DC Universe will enjoy what is on offer in Scribblenauts Unmasked. To me that offers a more authentic old-school comic book panel appearance. The colours aren’t that vibrant, leaning more towards dusty pastels. The graphics for Scribblenauts Unmasked are, of course, quite cartoon-like, but the lines are much cleaner than previous games in the series. Add to that ability the expansive DC Comics Universe and almost all that it encapsulates and you have a myriad of outcomes just waiting to unfold. Other than that, the dictionary is your oyster, so to speak. The only thing limiting the outcome is your clean, ever so slightly censored imagination and your ability to spell words correctly. Does someone declare they are hungry? Write the word “burrito”, for example, and that should not only satisfy their appetite, but complete the assignment bestowed upon you. Your tool of choice to conquer these feats and lay waste to your enemies? A magical notebook that creates (almost) anything you write on it.

This combination of a quietly successful videogame franchise and one of the world’s leading comic book companies presents a tongue-in-cheek romp through the DC Universe that’s only restrained by how well you guide the lead character, Maxwell, and how creative you can be when using his notebook.įor those unfamiliar with the Scribblenauts concept, it doesn’t take much to get a handle on it: you are faced with a series of tasks that you need to complete. Who doesn’t love them? If you disagreed, then Scribblenauts Unmasked probably won’t be your cup of tea.

The gameplay is questionable, the unlock system is flawed, and while it’s great to play with so many powers, it’s just too bad it wasn’t utilized to it’s full potential.Superheroes. The game tries to simultaneously please Scribblenauts and DC fans, but won’t completely be able to do either one. This is really cool (my personal favorite to play was Batman). However, one cool feature they did add is to play through the origin stories of six different superheroes. Enemies can gang up on you and make it nearly impossible. Some of the control feels limited, like picking which power to use can be difficult. Some of them are way too expensive, and can cost up to 3,000 currency. The majority are unlockable through buying with in-game currency. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone else with this game, so I am unable to unlock these. This is not even mentioning the smaller issues, like how a few of the costumes require you to use Streetpass functionality to find other people who own the game. Most of the gameplay consists of helping civilians to build up currency for unlocking new areas. There are barely any Starites to collect. Unfortunately, the gameplay is what kills the experience. This can be somewhat broken, but it’s still a cool thing to have. There are hundreds of possibilities, and even the ability to add adjectives to other objects. Any costume, any gadget, everything is here. With hundreds of characters included, form the most well-known to the most obscure, any hero you can think of is most likely featured in here. To finally have a licensed property in a Scribblenauts game was a great idea, which, in this case, is DC Comics.
